Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery Residency Program in Brawijaya University Faculty of Medicine started since 1980 and 1982. The Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery was visited by Proffessor Purnaman S. Pandi. Airlangga University Faculty of Medicine’s Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery Department was designated as foster parent.

Subsequently, in June 16th 1982 and in May 4th-5th 1983, we were visited by representatives from Airlangga University Faculty of Medicine. The Brawijaya University Faculty of Medicine’s Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery was then allowed to conduct 3 out of 7 semesters residency program, enlisting 2 to 4 participants every year.

In 1987, there was 1 participant enlisted in the residency program for 4 semesters, who then continued the education in Airlangga University Faculty of Medicine’s Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery Department. The program was vacuum for a while.

In 1989, there was another visitation by representatives from Airlangga University Faculty of Medicine, but there was no notification about the result of the visitation. The residency program became uncertain, since it existed without actual educationol activity.

At Konas PERHATI X in 1992 in Jakarta, we were encouraged to conduct inventorization again.

At Konas PERHATI XI in 1995 in Yogya, we were advised to form our own PERHATI branches as well as conducting inventorization again.

At Rapim PERHATI in April 1996 in Jakarta , South East Java branches of PERHATI was officially established and assigned to organize the Annual Scientific Meeting. From that moment, ??the organization and the human resources were improved in order to prepare the residency program.

At the PIT PERHATI in Batu Malang on 27th of October 1996, it was advised for Airlangga University to supervise the residency program.

At Rapim PERHATI in July 1997 in Solo, it was again encouraged for Airlangga University to supervise the residency program.

At Rapim PERHATI in April 1998 in Jakarta, it was again encouraged for Airlangga University to supervise the residency program.

On 15th of April 1999, there was visitation from Airlangga University Faculty of Medicine’s Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, validating the Brawijaya University Faculty of Medicine’s Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery to be able to carry out the residency program with annotations:

  1. To do improvement in advance
  2. Acceptable enlistment of 1 to 2 residents every year
  3. All stages of education will be carried out in Brawijaya University Faculty of Medicine’s Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, Dr. Saiful Anwar General Hospital
  4. Assessment of every stage of education will be done in Airlangga University Faculty of Medicine’s Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, dr. Soetomo General Hospital

In July 2001, meeting of the college of Otolaryngology head and neck surgery in Palembang decided that Brawijaya University Faculty of Medicine’s Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, Dr. Saiful Anwar General Hospital Malang might conduct the residency program with registration of participants at the Airlangga University Faculty of Medicine’s Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery.

Starting from January 2002 to July 2003, Brawijaya University Faculty of Medicine’s Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, Dr. Saiful Anwar General Hospital Malang accepted 5 residents from Airlangga University Surabaya, in accordance with the statement of collaboration between the Airlangga University Faculty of Medicine and Dr. Soetomo General Hospital with Brawijaya University Faculty of Medicine and Dr. Saiful Anwar General Hospital No. 710.503.1.17/KS/2002 in the development of  otolaryngology head and neck surgery residency program, where:

  1. All stages of education including the assessment carried out in the Brawijaya University Faculty of Medicine’s Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery with reference to the Airlangga University Faculty of Medicine’s Department of  Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery Dr. Soetomo General Hospital curriculum
  2. Educational guide book containing educational curriculum will be provided by the Brawijaya University Faculty of Medicine’s Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery. The educational guide book can be adapted to the prevailing curriculum of Airlangga University Faculty of Medicine’s Department of  Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery

Thereafter, residency education implementation plan handbook was drafted on 2003.

Subsequently, otolaryngology heand and neck surgery residency program at Brawijaya University Faculty of Medicine was formed according to:

  1. Decree of Indonesian Medicine College Counsil number 56/SK/MKKI/IV/2003 regarding education of otolaryngology head and neck surgery residents at Brawijaya University Faculty of Medicine on April, 28th 2003.
  2. Decree of Deans of Faculties of Medicine organizing residency program number 4675/FD.PPDS/SK/2003 dated July, 29th 2003
  3. Decree of Rector of Brawijaya University number 206/SK/2003 regarding the establishment of otolaryngology head and neck surgery study program as residency program at Brawijaya University Faculty of Medicine dated September, 16th 2003.
  4. Letter from Director General of higher education of National Education Department number 1207/D/7/04 regarding organizing liscense of Eye and otolaryngology head and neck surgery residency program dated March, 19th 2004.

At the Brawijaya University Faculty of Medicine’s Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery dr. Saiful Anwar General Hospital meeting on 1st – 3rd of June 2007 in Batu, the Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery residency education handbook 2012 was created.

College of Indonesian Otolaryngologist Head and Neck Surgeron since 2008 applied module system to achieve the competency of Otolaryngology head and neck surgery specialist. From the odd semester in 2010, residents had underwent module system for their 1st to 3rd semester. After even semester in 2010, residents underwent station system with module material.

At the Brawijaya University Faculty of Medicine’s Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery dr. Saiful Anwar General Hospital meeting on 24th – 25th of February 2012 in Malang, it was agreed to revise the Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery residency education handbook 2012.
