Lung Cancer Awareness Program by PPDS-1 Participants of Pulmonology and Respiratory Medicine from Brawijaya University at Saiful Anwar General Hospital Clinic

Malang, May 21, 2024 – Participants of the Specialist Doctor Education Program (PPDS) 1 in Pulmonology and Respiratory Medicine from Brawijaya University’s Faculty of Medicine conducted a lung cancer awareness program at the Saiful Anwar General Hospital Clinic on Tuesday, May 21, 2024. The event, which began at 8:00 AM, was attended by dozens of enthusiastic patients and their families who participated in the activities until the end.

The aim of this awareness program was to enhance public knowledge and awareness about lung cancer, including its risk factors, early symptoms, prevention methods, and the importance of early detection. Dr. Marsha Nurandhini, one of the PPDS-1 participants and a speaker at the event, emphasized that lung cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in Indonesia.

“With the right knowledge, we can reduce the risk of lung cancer. Smoking is the main risk factor, but air pollution and exposure to harmful chemicals also contribute,” said Dr. Rahmawati during her presentation. She also explained the early signs of lung cancer, such as persistent coughing, shortness of breath, chest pain, and unexplained weight loss.

During the awareness session, attendees were given the opportunity to ask questions and discuss with the young doctors. One participant, Mrs. Sari, found the event very helpful. “I now understand better the dangers of smoking and the importance of regular check-ups. This session was very informative and motivated me to live a healthier life,” she said.

In addition to providing verbal information, the PPDS-1 participants also distributed brochures and leaflets containing detailed information about lung cancer and tips for maintaining lung health. They also introduced a free lung health screening program available at Saiful Anwar General Hospital.

Dr. Saidah Mafisa, the event coordinator, hopes that this program will inspire the public to be more concerned about their lung health. “We hope that through this awareness program, people will be more alert to the early symptoms of lung cancer and seek medical help promptly if needed.”

This awareness program is part of the community service initiative by the Faculty of Medicine at Brawijaya University, which is regularly conducted to improve public health and well-being. It is hoped that events like this will reduce the incidence of lung cancer and raise public awareness about the importance of a healthy lifestyle. The awareness event at Saiful Anwar General Hospital Clinic concluded with the hope that the information provided will bring positive changes to people’s lives and help reduce the incidence of lung cancer in Malang and surrounding areas.
