History and Profile of the Pediatric Health Sciences Study Program
Malang School of Medicine (STKM), established on September 14, 1963, is a private medical school that is the precursor to the Faculty of Medicine at Brawijaya University. The opening of Malang Medical College (PTKM) was established on September 14, 1963, by Major General Dr. Satrio, the Minister of Health, initially admitting 105 students as its first learners. Then, on March 18, 1964, PTKM was renamed and registered under the Department of Higher Education No. 76/B.swt/P/64, becoming Malang School of Medicine (STKM). In its development, on January 1, 1976, STKM was granted the status of a State Faculty of Medicine and became part of Brawijaya University (UB) in Malang. Subsequently, all education and examinations for 765 students and 426 young doctors were conducted independently by 53 permanent and 36 non-permanent lecturers.
As the organization of FKUB continued to strengthen and societal needs increased, FKUB expanded its specialist and postgraduate education. Specialist education programs began with hospital-based education before becoming part of higher education. Starting with Sp1 Surgery as the first specialist program, FKUB now has 33 study programs (PS). The development of postgraduate education at FKUB began with the Postgraduate Program at the university level, developed jointly with Gadjah Mada University. The Master’s Program in Biomedical Sciences was one of the 8 Postgraduate Programs that initiated postgraduate education at UB in 1998, followed by the Master’s Program in Hospital Management in 2004 as part of the Study Interest in Master’s Program. In line with changes in management policies, both Master’s programs transferred management to the Faculty of Medicine in the academic year 2008/2009.
The demand for professional healthcare workers also drove FKUB’s role as the parent institution for other professional health education programs, namely Nursing, Nutrition, Midwifery, and Pharmacy, which have continued to evolve from undergraduate to professional and Master’s levels. As of 2020, FKUB oversees 6 Departments (Medicine, Specialties, Nursing, Nutrition, Midwifery, and Pharmacy) with 33 study programs (PS), consisting of Bachelor’s/S1 level programs (5 PS), Professional programs (5 PS), S2-S3 programs (5 PS), and Specialist programs (18 PS).
